SABIN Online lecture series 2023/24 

This year’s online lectures will take place throughout autumn and winter, delivered virtually over Microsoft Teams. Each lecture will last one hour and is approved for 1hr CPD time. An outline of our speakers and topics are below.

Consideration of pharmacological and behavioural approaches, both in the early inpatient setting and in addressing more enduring difficulties 

Speakers: Dr Killian Welsh and Dr Blanca Poveda 

Date and time: Tuesday 21 November 2023 at 12.30pm 

Dr Poveda is a Clinical Neuropsychologist and research fellow, and Dr Welsh is a Consultant Psychiatrist, both based within NHS Lothian. Their session will give an overview of papers and medication for patients, followed by a discussion of the practical aspects including the ABC of drafting an orientation sheet, behavioural charting etc. 

Modern ICU management of brain injury  

Speaker: Dr Jonathan Rhodes 

Date and time: Tuesday 28 November at 12.30pm 

We are delighted to welcome Dr Jonathan Rhodes, Consultant Intensivist and Anaesthetist in NHS Lothian and Honorary Reader at the University of Edinburgh, who will give us an overview on how trials over the last 10 years have shaped modern clinical practice.   

Rehabilitation – it’s impact when done well 

Speakers: Karen Scott and Jane-Marie Stobie 

Date and time: Tuesday 5 December 2023 12.30pm 

Karen Scott, AHP Consultant Major Trauma in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Jane-Marie Stobie, AHP Consultant Brain Injury Rehabilitation in NHS Lanarkshire will join us for this session where they will outline implications of what can happen without good rehabilitation and examples of best practice. 

Concussion in sport 

Speakers: Jonathan Hanson 

Date and time: Thursday 7 December at 12.30pm 

We look forward to welcoming Jonathan Hanson, Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine from NHS Fife who also serves as Chair of the Scottish Government Concussion advisory group and Team Doctor for Glasgow Warriors. Jonathan served as physician at both national and international sporting events, and will give an overview of concussion in sport, including an update on V3 of the Scottish grassroots concussion guidance. 

Development of a head injury service in NHS Lanarkshire 

Speakers: Jane-Marie Stobie, Lynn Grayson and Helen Maclean 

Date and time: Thursday 14 December at 12.30pm 

Hear from our colleagues in NHS Lanarkshire, who will give an overview of the new head injury service due to launch in late autumn this year. 

The session will include: 

  • How the service came about and how funding was agreed 
  • The general establishment and set-up  
  • How the service links into patient care pathways 
  • Staffing arrangements 
  • Lessons’ learned 

Longer term consequences of TBI 

Speakers: Alan Carson 

Date and time: TBC 

Alan will join us to conclude the series, to discuss the longer-term consequences of traumatic brain injury.
